Activities/Descriptions
Weekly
Weekly Meeting
o Lions meet to share fellowship. Each meeting includes
a meal and a program that with a guest speaker. Guests are welcome.
o Every Friday: 12:00 pm at the San Marcos Activity Center
Student of the Week
o Lions present an award to a deserving student from
an area high school
o Presented at the weekly meeting
Monthly
Board Meeting
o Officers and Board of Directors meet to discuss
club business, including Financial Statements, Committee Reports,
and Awards.
o 2nd Monday: 5:30 pm at the San Marcos Public Library (subject
to change)
Finance Committee Meeting
o Finance Committee reviews finances, including statements
and requests for funding.
o 3rd Monday: 11:30 am at Luby’s Cafeteria (subject to change)
Elephant Ear Removal
o Lions maintain a beautification project for a small
portion of the river which includes removal of elephant ears and
planting of new aquatic vegetation.
o 1st Friday: 3:00 pm at the Tube Rental Facility
Teacher of the Month
o Lions present an award to a deserving teacher from
an area school
o Presented at a weekly meeting
San Marcos Lions Club
Activities/Descriptions
Annually
Mexican Dinner
o Lions serve the community a dinner which consists
of Mexican food prepared by the Gary Job Corp Culinary Arts Department.
Tickets are sold for this event. Each Lion is required to sell at
least 10 tickets.
o Friday of the 1st weekend of February: All day at the Tube Rental
Facility
(Selling of tickets begins in January)
o Lions maintain a tube rental business as a fundraiser.
This business has a manager and full-time staff. Each Lion is required
to work at least 5 shifts. These shifts are during weekends and
involve handing out tubes, collecting tokens, and helping where
needed.
o Opens 1st Weekend of May for weekends only
o Operates daily beginning Memorial Day through Labor Day Weekend
o Closes last weekend of September
Lion’s Camp Workday
o Lions travel to Kerrville to Texas Lions Camp (TLC),
a summer camp build for children with disabilities. This day includes
preparing the facility for campers. Tasks include cleaning, painting,
etc.
o May
Scholarships
o Lions award $1,000 Scholarships to 11 San Marcos
High School Seniors who plan to attend college.
o Committee meets in April
o Awards given at club meeting and Awards Ceremony at High School
Awards Banquet
o Lions meet to recognize club and individual accomplishments.
New officers are inducted to begin their duties July 1.
o June/July
Summerfest
o Lions assist in preparation of July 4th Celebration
put on by the San Marcos Parks & Recreation Department. Lions
Sponsor the River Parade, which includes a series of Floats that
travel down the river. The evening ends with a fireworks show.
o July 4th at the San Marcos River
Lions Charities
o Lions meet to discuss Lions Charities, Inc, an
entity creating to run the Mobile Health Screening Unit.
o 1st Friday after the 2nd Monday of July at 12:00pm at the weekly
meeting
Food Baskets
o Lions deliver food baskets to needy families. These
baskets consist of food to provide a Christmas Dinner including
a turkey, sides, and drinks.
o Saturday Before Christmas: A.M. behind the “large”
H.E.B.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing
o Lions volunteer to ring bells at certain locations
in town to help the Salvation Army raise money for need Hays County
residents.
o December
Christmas Party
o Lions meet to socialize, celebrate the Holidays,
and reflect on the previous year.
o December
Mobile Health Screening Unit (MHSU)
o Lions volunteer to operate a mobile health facility
that screens vital health of any adult who requests the service.
This is a free service and is generally used at events with large
crowds such as business expositions and health fairs.
o Scheduled throughout the year.
Zone, Region, District and International Meetings
and Conventions are also held throughout the year. Members are encouraged
to attend when available.
